Cerulli counts $54 trillion passing to spouses before any child sees it.‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
BOOMERS TRADE
Andrew James reporting. 64, and counting.
The first heir is usually sitting across the breakfast table
The great wealth transfer gets pictured as parents handing money to their children. Before most of it gets there, it makes a long stop with the husband or wife who is left.
$40 trillion
Projected to pass to widowed women in the boomer and older generations through 2048, before it moves on to anyone else.
$54 trillion. That is how much a research firm called Cerulli Associates expects to pass from one spouse to the other through 2048.
It moves sideways first, inside the same generation. The children wait their turn, sometimes for a decade or more.
The first stop for much of that money is a kitchen table. One chair empty.
So this is your read today if you are married and past 60. One of you will probably run the whole household’s money for a while, alone.
A word from this week’s partner · Porter & Co.
Your money is changing.
For the first time in half a century, the U.S. dollar is being reset.
The last time this happened was 1974, when Henry Kissinger anchored the dollar to Saudi oil and set in motion the greatest accumulation of wealth in the history of the world.
It cleaved a sharp dividing line through this country. Between the families who built fortunes that lasted for generations, and the families who were quietly left behind.
And what you do in response could decide which side you and your family ends up on.
My name is Porter Stansberry, and I’ve spent the last thirty years studying how enormous shifts in the global economy create – and destroy – wealth.
In 2006, I warned my readers about the looming collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – years before it brought the American banking system to its knees.
In 2008, I told them to buy gold and silver. Both more than doubled while the dollar’s purchasing power collapsed.
And in 2020, I warned that the COVID-era money-printing would trigger the worst inflation in a generation. It did.
This foresight has helped my team and I anticipate some of the biggest moves in the capital markets – helping our readers take early positions in companies like Amazon, Adobe, Qualcomm, Regeneron, Intuitive Surgical, Meta, Shopify.
I’m writing to you today because I believe what is happening to the US dollar right now may be the most consequential financial story I have covered in my career.
After months of investigation, I am ready to expose, in full, President Trump’s monetary reset.
Porter & Co.
In my new documentary you’ll learn how the biggest change to America’s money in half a century is already underway…
How everything you’ve seen in the news over the past few years – the tariffs, the obsession with Greenland, the threats to annex Canada, the $1.4 trillion deal with the UAE, the disputes with China – all of it is connected to Trump’s New Dollar.
And you’ll also learn the specific steps I believe every American needs to take before a critical meeting of world leaders this December, which could change the U.S. dollar as you know it.
If you have money in the stock market or savings in the bank…
Find the time to watch it today.
Good investing,
Porter Stansberry
Cerulli puts the full transfer at $124 trillion through 2048. About $105 trillion is headed to heirs and $18 trillion to charity.
Most of it comes from boomer households, 79% by the firm’s count. The schedule is the one this cohort is already living.
Three numbers from the same report show the order the money travels in, from the biggest pile down to the first stop.
$124 trillion
Total wealth Cerulli expects to change hands through 2048
$54 trillion
Passing first from one spouse to the other
$40 trillion
Of that, going to widowed women in the boomer and older generations

Women tend to outlive their husbands. They also tend to marry slightly older men. Put those together and the first heir in most marriages is a widow.
She inherits the accounts. The house. The passwords. Sometimes she inherits an adviser she has met twice.
That is the part the recaps skip. Order matters. The handoff to the children is years away. The handoff to her can happen on a Tuesday.
Where the cohort’s money sits this quarter, and when the money changes hands inside the family.

Travel
The trip years, often planned by one spouse and paid for from accounts in one name.

Health & Housing
The cohort is here this quarter
The doctor and the house that changes. One spouse usually becomes the caregiver first.

Longevity
Next in front of the money
More good years, which for most couples means more years for her after him.

Estate
The handoff stage, which usually happens twice. First to the spouse, then to the children.
Cerulli’s own report holds the honest limit on all of this. These are projections built on today’s prices for stocks and homes. A bad decade for either shrinks them.
The money is also lopsided. Cerulli says more than half of the total, $62 trillion, comes from wealthy households that make up about 2% of all households.
Most families will pass along a house, a retirement account, and some savings. That is still a lot to hand someone who never had to manage it.
Who is already standing there
The adviser who invites the wife to the meeting. Cerulli lists building ties with clients’ spouses and children as a top long-term growth plan for wealth managers. When the paperwork changes hands, the account tends to stay with the people she already knows. Every marriage on its books holds a second client.
The arithmetic
Cerulli Associates, The Cerulli Report: U.S. High-Net-Worth and Ultra-High-Net-Worth Markets 2024, press release December 5, 2024: $124 trillion in wealth projected to transfer through 2048, $105 trillion to heirs and $18 trillion to charity; $54 trillion in transfers between spouses, nearly $40 trillion of it to widowed women in the baby boomer and older generations; developing relationships with clients’ spouses or children cited as a top long-term growth strategy for high-net-worth practices. 79% of the transfer from baby boomer households, and $62 trillion (more than half) from high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth households, about 2% of all households: Cerulli, as reported by Rethinking65 and Funds Society, December 2024. The observations that women tend to outlive their husbands and marry slightly older men describe well-known demographic patterns and are not figures. The married reader past 60 and the Tuesday are illustrations.

This week, put both names on the next meeting with whoever handles your money. Then make sure the one who does not usually go knows where everything lives. The first heir should never be the last to find the passwords.
