Andrew James. A weekday letter, half past one, Eastern.
In 2020 there were three. The count reached eleven by 2024, and the tilt is still going one direction. Every weekday afternoon I write about what that does to the money. Then I name the businesses already standing where the tilt lands.
One letter each weekday at 1:30 Eastern. No card, and no ticker tips.
States where residents over 65 outnumber residents under 18, as of July 2024. Three of them in 2020.
What I do with an afternoon
Everyone can read the first number. Eleven states, and the gap between old and young is closing everywhere else.
So I go looking for the second one.
A county that tips does not just get greyer. Its ambulance calls change. Its ballot changes. Its school budget changes, and so does the thing the county needs built next.Somebody has already priced that in. Usually not the name you would guess.
Americans 65 and older, July 2024
Americans under 18, same date
The gap is under 12 million now. In 2020 it was over 20. Nothing about that reverses inside a decade, because the people who close it have already been born.
The contractor who stopped bidding on second-story additions four years ago did not need a forecast. He needed a birthday table and a look out the window.
That is the whole job. One move on a schedule nobody disputes, read as arithmetic. Then the kind of business standing in front of it, named plainly.
THE TERMS
No tickers
I do not name tickers. Not once, not as a favour, not in a postscript. You will finish a letter knowing where the money is going and who catches it. The call is still yours to make.
No price calls
I do not tell you what a share will be worth. Anyone who does that is guessing at you rather than working for you.
Slow by design
And the thing I track is slow. A birthday calendar moves in years, not in weeks. If you want something that moves this week, this is not the letter for you. I would rather lose you now than waste your afternoons.
The ceiling
There is a limit on the good news too. A business that sells to people who have no choice can only charge what families can actually pay. When a need gets scarce and expensive, the state tends to notice. The moat and the ceiling arrive together, and I will say so when they do.
It showed up in a housing figure, then a hiring figure, then a builder's order book. By the time it is a headline, the lease is already signed.
So I spend my mornings reading the documents nobody else finishes. Then I tell you what is in them, at half past one, Eastern, every weekday.
No card. Leave with one click, whenever you want. I do not sell your address.
P.S. You will get older on the same schedule as everyone else, and that part is settled. What is not settled is which chair you sit in. The customer, or the person who saw the customer coming. I write for the second chair, and I will save you a seat at half past one.
