Three men who have served as president of the United States were born in 1946. All three turn eighty this year. So does Cher, and so does Dolly Parton.
For ten years the number everybody watched was sixty-five. Sixty-five is when the paperwork changes.
Eighty is when the house changes. The driving stops. Somebody else starts making the calls. Ask anyone who has been through it with a parent. They will name eighty every time.
And this is the part I checked twice. 1946 was one of the smaller birth years of the whole boom.
Annual births in this country did not cross four million until 1954. Then they stayed above four million for eleven straight years.
So the group turning eighty right now is the shallow end. The deep part gets there in 2034 and keeps coming for another eleven years after that.

The year that 1954 class turns eighty, and the line steepens
This cohort will also be the first to reach eighty with machines already living in the house. The camera that notices a fall. The speaker that mentions the pill. Software that reads the scan before a person opens it. None of that was in my mother’s kitchen.
Eighty is where two aisles open at once, and the order still holds.
Somebody has to physically carry all of it through the front door. That part gets skipped in every story about aging, and it is a business with a truck and a warehouse.
The catch is the warehouse. A bed earns nothing while it sits on a rack. The relationship lasts two seasons. The whole thing is fought out county by county. Which is why the names in it are ones you have never heard.
Settle something for me, since I have you on a Saturday. What year is on your own birth certificate? Reply with just the year and nothing else. I want to see where this letter actually sits on the schedule.
The arithmetic
The first baby boomers, those born in 1946, began turning eighty on 1 January 2026, and the generation spans births from 1946 to 1964 (Pew Research Center, January 2026). The population aged eighty and over stood at 14.7 million in 2025 and is projected to reach 29.4 million by 2045 (Brookings analysis of Census Bureau projections, January 2026). American births totalled about 76 million across the boom, first crossed four million a year in 1954, and stayed above that level until 1965 (National Center for Health Statistics, compiled by Pew). The identification of 1954 plus eighty as the year the line steepens is Boomers Trade’s own arithmetic. The read on who profits, and the note about the warehouse, are Boomers Trade’s own.
Watch 2034. Nothing happens that morning. It matters because every business in this aisle is either built for that year, or watching somebody else unload the truck.
My own certificate says 1962. I have a while yet. So does most of this list, and the depot already knows that too.

Boomers Trade is written by someone getting older right alongside you, and watching who profits from it.
