Nearly half of retirees live on the check alone. A whole industry noticed the gap.‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌
BOOMERS TRADE
Andrew James reporting. 64, and counting.
The check comes on the third. The prices got there first.
Nearly half of us now live on Social Security alone. This year’s raise already vanished into the gas pump.
24.8M
Older Americans who now live on Social Security and nothing else, up sharply in a single year.
Start with the check. For a typical retired worker it runs about two thousand dollars a month. For a lot of us now, it is the whole income.
More than half of seniors live on less than that figure, by the Senior Citizens League’s newest survey.
This year’s raise did not keep up with the shelf price. The Part B premium took a cut. The pump took more.
The check. The pump. The pharmacy. Three numbers pulling apart.
So a whole industry grew up around the gap. Apps that pay you for what the phone already does.
Listen to music, play a game, let the screen run in the corner. A few cents here, a few there, dropped in like a tip. For a generation counting every dollar, a few dollars sounds like a place to start.
A word from this week’s partner · Mode Mobile
Mode Mobile has reserved the Nasdaq ticker $MODE.
The company behind the EarnPhone, 490M+ users and $115M+ in revenue, has reserved its ticker symbol ahead of a planned listing. The pre-IPO round is still open to retail investors.
Reserving a ticker is the step a private company takes when it intends to go public. Mode Mobile has stated an intent to list within the next 18 to 24 months. An intent to IPO is not a guarantee that one will occur, but it signals where the company is headed.
For now, the company is still private. Shares in the Regulation A+ offering are $0.52 each, with up to 20% bonus shares for early investors. More than 60,000 investors have already participated.
A real business, not a projection. $115M+ revenue, $11.8M EBITDA, 32,481% three-year growth.

The catch sits with the user. A few dollars a month is real. It is also small. It will not close a two-thousand-dollar gap. Time traded for pennies is still time.
Who is already standing there
The one collecting sits in the middle. A platform earns on the size of the crowd it gathers, whatever each person clears. Attention is the inventory. A fixed-income generation with time to spare is deep, patient supply. The house counts the crowd. The crowd only grows.
The arithmetic
The 24.8 million older Americans living on Social Security alone, about 44 percent of the retirement-age population and up from 39 percent a year earlier, and the 57 percent of seniors living on less than $2,000 a month, are from the Senior Citizens League’s 2026 Senior Survey. The average retired-worker benefit near $2,000 a month and the 2.8 percent 2026 COLA are from the Social Security Administration. The 4.2 percent rise in consumer prices over the year to May is from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The read that the attention platform in the middle is the one already standing there is Boomers Trade’s own.

A fellow from my Tuesday breakfast tried one last month. He showed me eleven dollars after three weeks, proud of it. I did not have the heart to do the math out loud. Watch where the steady money sits. It is with the house counting the crowd, not the crowd.
